PUMA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with a special collection of sneakers and apparel inspired by the genre’s most iconic style icon: the Suede.
The Suede first hit the streets in 1968 and quickly became a favorite among athletes and musicians. In the 1970s, it became a staple of hip-hop fashion, thanks to its rebellious attitude and association with street culture.
The PUMA Suede Collector’s Edition pays homage to the early days of hip-hop with a varsity jacket-inspired design. The shoe features a high-quality suede upper with crisp colors and contrast blocking. White piping outlines PUMA’s iconic Formstrip, which features tear-away black material, revealing white underneath. Subtle silver studs appear on the shoe’s upper and heel, while special touches appear in the form of waxed laces and a “48” stamp, signifying the year of PUMA’s founding in 1948.
The accompanying Suede Fat Lace is a purist expression of the silhouette’s history, recalling the impression that the Suede left on hip-hop style in the 1980s. This new iteration comes with fat laces and gold-colored lace charms, designed to be worn by hip-hop royalty.
Informed by hip-hop history, the PUMA Suede Collector’s Edition and Suede Fat Lace are accompanied by a capsule of apparel, including a matching tracksuit, jerseys, and varsity jacket, also bearing PUMA’s “48” insignia.
This collection is a celebration of the shared history between PUMA and hip-hop. It’s a reminder of how the Suede has been a part of the genre since its inception, and how it continues to be a symbol of street culture and self-expression today.
